Supporting WWF's Earth Hour

27th March 2010 20.30 - 21.30

The Leader of the Council, Keith House, and Chief Executive Bernie Topham would like to invite you to join Eastleigh Borough Council in supporting WWF's Earth Hour on 27th March 2010.

As you may be aware, this Council was a Beacon Council for Tackling Climate Change in 2009 and continues to reduce both the effects and causes of climate change from its key business activities. We also wish to encourage our local community of individuals, households, businesses and organisations to do the same.

We are pleased to announce that this year the Council will be supporting WWF’s Earth Hour Campaign. Last year, over 1 billion people worldwide switched their lights off for one hour, sending a message to leaders and other members of their communities about the importance of tackling climate change. Even a significant amount of the lights of the Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera House, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament were switched off.

Do you think your organisation could support this campaign alongside us?

More details can be found at http://earthhour.wwf.org.uk/about_earth_hour/ but we would like to hear from you if you will be supporting Earth Hour and encouraging others to do the same. Please let our Sustainability Team know of your plans and we will publicise them via our Council website. As well as switching off lights, some people and organisations have organised special events, like the Portsmouth Radio Station that threw a “Party in the Dark”.

Our Sustainability Team can be contacted on 023 8068 8085 or via sustainability@eastleigh.gov.uk.
